Brother Number One follows Kiwi Rob Hamill, an Olympian and Trans-Atlantic rowing champion, to Cambodia where he seeks justice for his brother Kerry who was tortured and murdered in 1978. Kerry had been on board his yacht Foxy Lady with two others when they anchored near the Cambodian coast to shelter from a storm. They had sailed unknowingly from the hippie era of love and freedom into Year Zero. Along with Englishman John Dewhirst, Kerry was seized and tortured for two months at the Khmer Rouge slaughterhouse, Tuol Sleng (S21). A third sailor Canadian Stuart Glass was killed at capture. It was during the Atlantic row, 41 days of solitude at sea, that Rob began to properly grieve. Some years later, he heard there was to be a war crimes tribunal, the ECCC, in Cambodia and he decided to participate.
