The Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies is hosting the Cluster of Excellence "Beyond Slavery and Freedom: Asymmetrical Dependencies in Pre-Modern Societies". With its research the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies aims to overcome the binary opposition of "slavery versus freedom". We propose "asymmetrical dependency" as a new key concept including all forms of bondage across time and space.
